Deep within the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His being was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales through the lone tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day in day, watching over his wards imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Tales of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the website inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
